There are two different sizes of
mandrels (shafts): the A mandrel and the B
mandrel. The A mandrel is the same as a 7mm
mandrel and can be used to turn kits from any of the kit
suppliers. The B mandrel, however, is larger in
diameter (.289" dia.) and is used to turn some of the larger kits
manufactured only by Berea Hardwoods.
Knowing what mandrel is required when ordering kits from us
is easy to determine: If the bushing number has a
letter A in it (20A) then the A mandrel is
required - if the bushing number has a letter B in it
(16B) then the B mandrel is required. |

We offer an adjustable pen mandrel
that is sturdy, very well made, affordable,
accurate and is
easy to use.
Most turners want to save time and turn both pen barrels at
the same time. Pen turners know that the shorter the mandrel
the truer it runs (less run-out). This mandrel allows you to choose
the length you require to turn the number of barrels you
want. This mandrel is great for turning multiple
barrels when making the single barreled pens (Sierra,
Carbara, etc.).The mandrel is secured in a Type 303
stainless steel arbor using a nylon headed set screw.
The tolerances are closely held and you will be surprised
how tight the shaft fits the arbor and how accurately this
tool works. The mandrel shafts are 7 7/8" long and should be
long enough to handle any kit currently being sold by any
manufacturer. The thumb nut is threaded 1/4"-28 and is
interchangeable with the Berea mandrels we sell. |
| The 'A' and 'B' shafts
are NOT interchangeable. 'A' shafts require an 'A'
arbor, 'B' shafts require a 'B' arbor. |

Berea offers two different sizes of mandrels:
the 'A' mandrel which is a standard 7mm style
mandrel measuring .245" to .247" in diameter (the Craft
Supplies USA bushings, for example, fit this mandrel) and the
'B' mandrel which measures .291" in diameter. The heavier 'B'
shaft was designed for the larger Berea kits as it provides more
stability and less 'whip' than the 'A' shaft.
We have in stock the complete Berea Precision
System mandrels that will come with either a #1MT or #2MT arbors
as well as the straight shafts in both 'A' and 'B' sizes. Both
shafts have the same threads so that they will fit either the #1MT
and/or the #2MT arbors (somebody was paying attention!). |
